Lost, destroyed, or stolen license plate — what to do
If a license plate is lost or stolen, it must always be replaced with a new one, so it can't be misused.
Personalized plates
The same procedure applies if you lost or had a personalized plate stolen. You forfeit the right to a duplicate — you either get a standard plate assigned, or apply again for a personalized plate, but with a different registration number, paying the 5,000 CZK fee again.
Theft — report it to the Czech Police
If you discover both license plates were stolen, you should report the loss to the Czech Police as soon as possible. This covers you in case someone misuses your plate — for example for a gas-station theft.
Warning: you must not drive a vehicle without license plates. You risk a fine of up to 10,000 CZK and a driving ban of up to one year. You should park the vehicle and get to the relevant vehicle registry as soon as possible. A vehicle must not stand on a public road without license plates or unmarked — so at minimum write the registration number on a piece of paper behind the windshield and get to the vehicle registry as soon as possible.
Damaged plates
Damaged plates can be exchanged for new ones with a different registration number, or you can apply for a duplicate at the vehicle registry.
