Registering alternative wheels — Škoda Octavia

Verified 1 May 2026 · RoadLegal.cz editorial team

Alternative wheel rims or spacers that differ dimensionally from what's stated in the vehicle's registration documents usually need to be formally registered in Czechia. Without registration, the vehicle risks failing inspection as not roadworthy.

When registration is needed

Registration is required whenever rim dimensions, offset, or the use of spacers deviates from the data approved for your specific vehicle. If the alternative wheel set has ECE homologation and matches dimensions stated directly in the registration documents (e.g. it's one of the manufacturer-approved sizes), separate registration may not be needed.

Registration process

  1. Technical assessment — issued by STK K-technik or a testing body (e.g. DEKRA) based on measurements and a check of the wheel installation.
  2. Application for a registry change — filed at the ORP transport department (municipal authority with extended powers) along with the assessment.
  3. Issuing a new registration certificate / updating the existing one — once approved, the authority registers the change and the vehicle can legally be operated with the new wheels.

Cost and time

The assessment and registration itself typically cost 2,000–6,000 CZK depending on the testing body and the scope of measurement. The whole process, from booking the assessment to receiving the updated registration, takes roughly days to weeks.
