ECE/E-homologated exhaust on a VW Golf — no registration needed

Verified 15 April 2026 · RoadLegal.cz editorial team

An ECE/E-homologated sport exhaust is one of the few modifications you can fit to a VW Golf with no registration in the vehicle documents at all — provided it meets the homologation requirements.

What makes the modification legal

The key is the E (or lowercase e) homologation mark on the part, corresponding to UNECE Regulation No. 59 on replacement silencing systems. If the exhaust carries this mark and matches the approved type for your model, no further official step — registration, assessment, or ABE — is needed.

What the inspection checks

During a routine inspection, the inspector checks for the homologation mark on the part and the visible condition of the exhaust system. If it's evident the catalytic converter was removed or another modification was made that no longer matches the homologation, the vehicle will fail inspection regardless of the mark on the tip.

Recommendation

Even though registration isn't required, it's practical to carry the homologation certificate (often included with the exhaust by the manufacturer) — it makes any check by the police or at inspection easier if the mark on the part isn't fully legible.
