Daytime running lights (DRL) — retrofitting without registration
Verified 23 June 2026 · RoadLegal.cz editorial team
Under current regulations, cars and buses can be retrofitted with daytime running lights (DRL). For retrofitting, you must use lamps homologated as a daytime running light — marked (D)RL above the country's homologation mark per UNECE Regulation No. 87.
Placement requirements (UNECE Regulation No. 48)
- Count — two lamps at the front of the vehicle
- Width — inner edges of the lamps at least 600 mm apart
- Height — from 250 mm to 1500 mm above the road surface
Wiring requirements
The wiring of daytime running lights must ensure that they:
- light up independently, without the position lights,
- turn on automatically when the engine starts and turn off when it stops,
- turn off when the headlamps are switched on (main beam, dipped beam, or fog lights).
Assessing correct placement and wiring per UNECE Regulation No. 48 is a specialist matter that can't be reliably judged by eye alone. Given how demanding the requirements are, we recommend leaving installation to a specialist shop — for example, an authorized dealer workshop or a shop specializing in vehicle electrics.
